about Shannon Toalson, LCP

I will begin seeing clients on October 16th, 2025. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist practicing in Lawrence, Kansas. I am committed to providing compassionate care that supports more than just symptom relief. I aim to help individuals foster deeper self-awareness, growth, and a greater sense of meaning and intention in their lives. Whether short-term support may be needed to navigate a difficult season, or a longer-term therapeutic relationship to pursue ongoing personal growth is desired, I tailor treatment to meet my clients as they are.

  • My Approach

I specialize in evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). I also draw from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and offer comprehensive Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT), including group skills training and phone coaching services. Additionally, I provide formal psychological assessments, including ADHD evaluations and Psychosocial Readiness Screenings necessary to qualify for life-changing procedures.

  • My Credentials

I received my Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Washburn University and have been licensed and practicing as a therapist in the state of Kansas for three years. Previously, I worked as a student intern and therapist at The DBT Center of Lawrence, receiving training from Dr. Juliet Nelson, LP in both standard and Radically Open DBT. Currently, I participate in supervision with Dr. Abby Callis, LP to ensure best, ethical practice and support my work.

  • Get to Know Me

I grew up in Lawrence and enjoy the community and culture here. Some things I love to do include eating great food, traveling to visit friends and family, discussing shows and books I've enjoyed, and doing all kinds of creative projects.

My Interests:

  • Radically Open DBT

I offer RO DBT to target overcontrol coping, helping people build skills of flexibility, openness, and deeper connection with others. Self-control is often a skill people strive to develop, and sometimes we can have too much of a good thing. I value this approach for the way it encourages curiosity, authenticity, and playfulness in life. Of course, I practice the very skills I teach to live out my own balanced, fulfilling life.

  • Interpersonal Therapy

I believe the therapeutic relationship is a powerful tool for growth and change. Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) helps clients understand their relationship patterns, improve communication, and navigate life transitions. It supports clients in strengthening connections and building the support systems needed to reach their goals.

  • Behavioral Therapy

With training in CBT and DBT, I help clients understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we identify unhelpful patterns and build effective strategies for meaningful, lasting change.
