about Abbey Pope, LPC
If you're looking for an affirming and empowering space to explore your emotions and identities, I'm here to help.
I’m a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Lawrence, Kansas. In other words, I’m a therapist. My mission is to help you accept yourself exactly as you are while also giving you the coping skills you need to build a more meaningful life. I specialize in helping young adults embrace their identities, improve their relationships, regulate their emotions, and cope with the stress and anxiety of work and school. I'm especially passionate about working with chronically ill clients and LGBTQ+ clients.

My Approach
My approach is all about striking a balance between accepting you exactly as you are while also empowering you to grow and change. In practice, that means I'll offer a lot of validation and highlight your strengths and successes, AND I’ll also challenge you when needed and teach practical skills to help you move toward your goals. I draw from person-centered therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindful Self-Compassion, and DBT-informed therapy to help you thrive.

Get to know me
I’m a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Kansas. I’m receiving supervision from Rachel Kostura Polk, LCPC. I have a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kansas. Previously, I worked as a therapy intern at the DBT Center of Lawrence.
In my free time, I love spending time with my friends, binge-watching psychological thrillers with my husband, reading, and hanging out with my golden retriever, Luna.
My Interests:
-
Young Adults
Early adulthood is a uniquely challenging time, especially when you’re coming of age in an era with so much instability. You’re figuring out who you are while also balancing school, friendships, relationships, career building, and a bit of existential dread. I love empowering college students and young adults by validating how difficult this is and teaching coping skills.

Chronically Ill Clients
When you develop a chronic illness, it can feel like your whole world has turned upside down, your body has turned against you, and nobody understands. I get it, and I can help you adapt. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindful Self-Compassion to help you build a life worth living with chronic illness.
-
LGBTQ+ Clients
I believe that everyone deserves therapy that is whole-heartedly affirming of their gender and sexual orientation, especially in this current political climate. My office is a safe, affirming, empowering space for you to explore issues related to sexuality and gender, and it always will be.
